| Artist's Statement~ I am a native Charlestonian, was born and have spent most of my life in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Like most other artists, I have drawn, painted, and shaped with anything that was at hand as far back as I can remember. In my formal education, I studied Classics--Latin and Greek, ancient history , architecture and art. I graduated from the College of Charleston and did the MA program at the University of Georgia, with postgraduate studies at Johns Hopkins and Columbia Universities. My art lessons were from some of the finest local artists, in my younger years. By the time I chose to return to my native talent, I had forgotten most of what I had been taught by anybody, and am presently working on what comes naturally now that I am closing in on my second childhood. Around 1990, I began painting the historic buildings and scenes of my native city, and in the years since I began full time pursuit of this as my livelihood, my work has become more interpretive, expressionistic and imaginative--the way one would hope an artistic vocation would develop. Scenes and influences of my own history are inserting themselves into my work, and this pull of my past is taking me back to places of my past, both figuratively and literally. As a child, I spent happy childhood times around San Diego in the 1950's, and I am headed there to artistically explore today's Southwest. "Go west, old lady, go west!" |
